Classical Arabic

Learn the language the Quran was revealed in

Classical Arabic (Fusha) is not just a language, it is the key to understanding the Quran directly, without a translator. Every word of the Quran, every Hadith, every classical text becomes accessible when you learn the language of revelation.

Why it matters

Why learn Classical Arabic?

Every translation is an interpretation. When you learn Classical Arabic, you hear the Quran as it was revealed, not as someone else understood it.

The Quran

Every Arabic letter, every grammatical structure in the Quran carries meaning. Classical Arabic lets you hear what was said, not what was translated.

The Scholars

Every major work of Islamic jurisprudence, theology, and Tafsir was written in Classical Arabic. Reading the scholars directly changes how you understand Islam.

The Living Chain

Our tutors do not just teach grammar, they transmit a living tradition of Arabic scholarship with documented chains of transmission.

Common questions

About learning Classical Arabic

What is Classical Arabic (Fusha) and how is it different from spoken Arabic?

Classical Arabic (al-Fusha) is the standardised, formal form of Arabic used in the Quran, Hadith, and centuries of Islamic scholarship. It follows precise grammatical rules (Nahw and Sarf). Modern spoken dialects (Ammiyya) vary significantly by region and have simplified grammar. Our tutors focus on Classical Arabic, the form most beneficial for understanding the Quran and classical texts directly.

Do I need to know the Arabic alphabet before starting grammar?

If you are a complete beginner, we recommend starting with the Arabic Alphabet stage, which covers letter recognition and basic reading in 10-14 sessions. If you can already read Arabic script (even without understanding), you can begin with Basic Grammar. Your tutor will assess your level in the first session.

How long does it take to understand the Quran in Arabic?

With consistent study at 2-3 sessions per week, most students can understand the general meaning of common Quranic passages within 6-12 months (covering alphabet, basic grammar, and Quranic vocabulary). Deeper comprehension of the full Quran takes longer and depends on how far you go into advanced grammar and rhetoric. Every step forward unlocks more of the Quran's meaning.

What classical texts will I be able to read?

Our Classical Texts path covers widely-studied works across Islamic sciences: Al-Ajrumiyyah (grammar), Arba'een Al-Nawawi (Hadith), Al-Aqeedah Al-Wasitiyyah (creed), introductory Tafsir texts, and classical Fiqh primers. Your tutor selects texts appropriate to your level and interests.

Can I learn Arabic alongside Quran recitation?

Yes, many students do both. You can book sessions with different tutors for Quran recitation and Classical Arabic, or find a tutor who teaches both. Learning Arabic alongside recitation deepens your connection to the Quran because you begin to understand what you are reciting.

Do your Arabic tutors have formal qualifications?

Yes. Every Arabic tutor on Qalam is manually reviewed before listing. Many hold Ijazah in Arabic sciences, formal degrees in Arabic language or Islamic studies, or equivalent teaching experience. We verify their background in Classical Arabic specifically, not just conversational ability.
