Scholar Vetting & Teaching Standards

How we select our tutors

Every Qalam tutor completes a rigorous four-step vetting process before they can teach a single session. Here is exactly how it works.

Why it matters

The Isnad System: a chain of trust spanning centuries

In the Islamic scholarly tradition, knowledge is not just studied — it is transmitted. An isnad is a documented chain of teachers linking a present-day scholar back through generations to the original source. For Quran recitation, every qualified reciter can trace their isnad back to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

This system is unique to Islamic scholarship. It means that when you learn Quran recitation from a tutor with authentic isnad, you are not just learning from one person — you are connecting to a living chain of transmission that has preserved the Quran's pronunciation, rhythm, and rules with remarkable precision for over 1,400 years.

Most online Quran platforms cannot verify their tutors' chains of transmission. At Qalam, isnad verification is the foundation of our vetting process. We prioritise tutors with documented chains.

In some cases — for certain subjects, time zones, or availability — a qualified and vetted teacher without a formal isnad may be offered as an alternative. When this happens, we tell you clearly before you book so you can make an informed choice.

Our vetting process

Four stages. Zero shortcuts.

Most applicants do not make it through. Those who do are scholars and teachers you can trust with your Quranic education.

01

Application & Screening

Every applicant submits their qualifications, certifications, and isnad documentation (where applicable). Our team reviews each submission against a criteria checklist: verified qualifications from institutions like Al-Azhar or the Islamic University of Madinah, demonstrable teaching experience, and — for Quran tutors — a documented chain of transmission. A minority of applicants pass this initial screening.

02

Knowledge Assessment

Shortlisted candidates complete a comprehensive written and oral assessment designed by senior scholars. For Quran tutors, this includes Tajweed theory, makharij al-huroof precision, and recitation from memory. For Arabic tutors, it covers grammar, morphology (sarf), syntax (nahw), and classical text comprehension. This is a pass-or-fail stage with no exceptions.

03

Demo Lesson & Pedagogy Review

Candidates deliver a live demo lesson to a review panel that includes at least one senior scholar. We assess not just knowledge, but teaching ability: clarity of explanation, patience, adaptability to different learning styles, use of scaffolding, and the ability to correct student errors constructively. A tutor who knows but cannot teach does not make it past this stage.

04

Background Verification

All candidates undergo identity verification, qualification authentication, and a background check appropriate to their jurisdiction. We contact references, verify institutional affiliations, and cross-check claimed credentials. This stage also includes a safeguarding assessment for tutors who will teach children. Only after clearing all four stages is a tutor listed on Qalam.

How sessions work

Teaching methodology

The traditional teacher-student relationship, adapted for online learning without losing what makes it work.

Live, One-to-One Sessions

Every session is live and one-to-one. Your tutor focuses entirely on your progress, adapting the pace and approach to how you learn best. This is not a pre-recorded course with occasional check-ins — it is the traditional teacher-student relationship, brought online.

Adaptive Curriculum

Your tutor assesses your current level in your first session and adapts the curriculum accordingly. You do not repeat what you already know, and you do not skip what you have not mastered. The six-stage curriculum (Noorani Qaida through Ijazah) provides the structure; your tutor personalises the path.

Traditional Isnad-Based Teaching

Our Quran tutors teach the way they were taught: through direct transmission. When you learn Tajweed or memorise with a Qalam tutor, you are connecting to an unbroken chain of teachers stretching back over a millennium. This is not a metaphor — it is a documented lineage.

Progress Tracking & Accountability

After every session, your tutor records notes on what was covered, what you mastered, and what needs more practice. Your dashboard shows your progress through the curriculum. You always know where you stand and what comes next.

Scholar credentials

What our tutors bring to every session

The qualifications and institutions that define a Qalam scholar — every credential verified before listing.

Ijazah Certification

An ijazah is a formal authorisation to teach and recite, granted by a qualified scholar who attests that the recipient has mastered the material and can trace their chain of transmission back to the Prophet ﷺ. Our Quran tutors hold ijazah in Hafs an Asim, with some also certified in Warsh an Nafi‘ or Qalun an Nafi‘.

Al-Azhar University

Several of our senior scholars are graduates of Al-Azhar in Cairo, one of the oldest and most respected institutions of Islamic learning. Degrees from Al-Azhar represent years of rigorous study in Quranic sciences, Hadith, Fiqh, and the Arabic language.

Islamic University of Madinah

Tutors with credentials from the Islamic University of Madinah bring a curriculum grounded in the classical Islamic scholarly tradition, with specialised training in Quranic sciences, Tajweed, and Arabic linguistics.

Dar al-Ulum & Other Seminaries

Beyond the major universities, our tutors hold qualifications from respected institutions including Dar al-Ulum (Cairo), Darul Uloom seminaries, and national Quran competition certifications. Every qualification is verified as part of our vetting process.
